Water Reservoirs in Yogyakarta Start to Dry Out

Several water reservoirs in Yogyakarta, particularly the ones in Gunungkidul, are drying out. To cope with the prolonged drought, authorized bodies have taken some actions, one of which is to drill 100-meter deep water wells.

“(Gunungkidul) has the most water reservoirs,” said Duty Manager of Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Gusti Bendara Pangeran Haryo Yudhoningrat, when met at his office on Friday, September 11.

“Some have been made in Cangkringan and Glagaharjo,” he added regarding the water wells.

In other places in Yogyakarta and Boyolali, new water reservoirs are being built to overcome drought. Langensari reservoir in Yogyakarta is estimated to finish by the end of 2015.

In Gunungkkidul, the drought has also delayed distribution of crop seeds grants. Sukardiyono, Head of Fertilizer and Seeds Section of Gunungkidul Crops Agency says he is unsure how long the distribution will be delayed.
